Russia Overview

Covering 1/6 of the land on the planet, Russia is by far the largest country in the World. Whilst some visitors will limit their stay in Russia to just two major cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, to get a real feel for the country it’s worth venturing further afield to explore the country’s other wonderful towns and villages and the myriad natural wonders that are just waiting to be discovered; venture out and you will find beautiful forests, towering mountains, glistening lakes, and flowing rivers.

Being such a vast country, Russia is divided into eleven time zones. This means that when you travel from region to region, it’s important to check which time zone you’re in. When you travel along the popular Trans-Siberian Railway, you cover at least 10 zones in just 7 days.

Russia is often associated with very cold and snowy weather, this is a misconception, due to its size, Russia’s climate changes from region to region. For much of the country the weather is warm and enjoyable from May to September, with temperatures in Summer reaching around 20-22°C (68-70°F), this, for many, is the best time to visit. However, it’s worth noting that all four seasons have their own unique appeal. If you’re looking for an adventurous and memorable experience, consider visiting Russia in winter! As Siberians say, “A Siberian is not the one who isn’t afraid of cold, but the one who dresses properly”.

Another misconception relates to the people of Russia, it is often thought that Russians do not smile at strangers. Whilst this may be true of some, Russia is a multi-national, multi-cultural society where people are open-minded, kind, and hospitable. Historically Russians are good cooks, farmers, and talkers, and they will never let their guests go cold or hungry.

Russia is the 9th most visited country in the world and has 23 UNESCO Heritage sites. Two of Russia’s great cities, the ‘capitals’, Moscow and St. Petersburg, are winners of World Travel Awards as the ‘Leading Tourist City Destination 2020’ and ‘The Leading Cultural City Destination 2020’.
